Musicians Detention Divestment letter

We are musicians in so-called Australia who will no longer participate in any detention security sponsored events or Australian immigration department and Home affairs sponsored events in solidarity with current and ex-detainees. We take this initiative in consultation with and at the request of ex-detainees at RISE: Refugee Survivors and eX-detainees.

We do not support or work with organisations that directly profit from detention camps. We do not support organisations  whose employees engage directly in the abuse and human rights violations of those who come here seeking refuge. Further, we do not support the Department of Home Affairs which creates these unethical and inhumane policies.

We divest from detention security companies (past and present) including MSS Security, Wilson Security, Serco and G4S, as well as the Department of Home Affairs. Together, these bodies run Australia's detention camps and profit from the continued abuse and torture of refugees in Australia and its offshore detention camps.

(RISE eX-detainees divestment call) http://riserefugee.org/divestment-call/

Australia has been committing crimes against refugees for nearly 3 decades, especially against those who are seeking protection arriving by boats. The Australian Government’s policies have resulted in the deaths, torture, abuse and sexual assault of adults as well as children who have come to this country for protection. These inhumane detention policies must end.

It is unethical, immoral and breaks our agreement as signatories to the 1951 Refugee Convention.

We urge the Australian Government to shut down all onshore and offshore detention centres,  to release all asylum seekers and refugees to the community and to restore the humanity of refugees seeking protection in Australia.

Eclipse.
